This is a comment thread for discussing upcoming changes to the discovery feed, and to make additional improvement proposals.
Upcoming changes
make_discoverable
I mostly hang out on the “recent” section to be honest. I only just checked the trending section a few times when i first joined. Other than that i am only using bearblog with the recent section and nothing else. I like the almost zero algorithm taste of it. I really like to just go to recent and read something not discovered yet and well, is a new topic too. (I generally do not like whats on trending personally, i mostly do not like the taste of the majority) for that reason i would not like a change for the recent section, i think it is great by itself right now.
Other than that yes opt in would be better i agree on that.
Thanks for the feedback. I won’t be adding anything algorithmic to the most recent feed and it will remain chronological by most recently published :)
I also agree with the above anonymous “i would not like a change for the recent section, i think it is great by itself right now.” I mean if you do add new features it will become subtack or reddit or lemmy.
I think “All posts after July 26th, 2024 will be opt-in instead of opt-out of showing on the discovery feed.”
You can implement toast on/off button on individul post. I mean some post i dont want it to be toast or upvotes. I want it to be just me and me without external motives.
What I want to implement is write. sonnet. io like experince simple, minimilist and distration free experince.

So currently toast on/off already exists, it just defaults to on. You can turn it off by specifying make_discoverable: false
where it is set to true
by default.
thank you. I know this feature but dont know that it will make the toast button disapper. I only thought it will make it only not discoverable on feed.
Whatever happens and however it evolves, I appreciate your work/Bear. Hail to You Champion.
Yeah I’d like you to make sure my posts are at the very top!
Just kidding, I think the opt-in and language filter makes sense for me personally. I don’t know that there should be any big qualifiers other than that to appear on recent.
All I can think of is maybe a character minimum, to weed out the “microblog” posts but that is purely a personal preference and not something I would force.
Or, if it’s actually doable and not a huge task, for a word count or soemthing to appear on the recents feed per post, and being able to filter on that. That seems like it might be annoying to implement though.
Either way, appreciate the transparency and all your work.
I made sure my fresh Swedish blog now has the correct language setting, so hopefully that one shows in your filter testing. Keeping my fingers crossed you can get it to work.
Somewhat related: It would be great if the name of the months were displayed in the blog’s language, instead of having it displayed in English or just numbers. I’d be happy to contribute. 😊 If it’s not possible, no biggie.
Thanks Herman for these great new changes. 🤩
Update: How about making language an option under ‘Settings’ instead? Maybe a dropdown, so people can’t add it incorrectly.
Changed my language setting to Swedish. But half of the times I write in English. Is it possine to set two languages for my blog?
You can set the language of the blog
in your homepage attributes, you can then also set the language of a post
in your post editor. If no post
language is set, it defaults to the blog
language.
So, if your blog langauge is en
you need to set sv
for your Swedish posts, or visa-versa.
I would love a language filter too!
The language filter is up and running. Give it a spin and let me know if you run into any issues or have any suggestions
It would be great if default language of discovery feed is same as default browser language or default language bear account.
I’m closing this issue. The discovery feed is running well. There’s a language feature, and posts are not opt-in. It turns out that with a few tweaks to the review system the newest page was cleaned up.
